I live in North Carolina. How do you go about starting a business selling cookies from you home kitchen?
I know some places where I can sell them, but what do I need to do to be legal?
What are the rules & regulations for a home based cookie business?
I like the office idea.
I’m not trying to sell a bunch of cookies.
Just a couple of hundred a week for supplemental income.
I don’t have a huge kitchen, so I don’t want to be big time. I just want to use it as a way to make some extra money on the side. And trust me, if you had my chocolate chip cookies, you’d buy them!

You probably can’t. Your kitchen needs to be approved and so health inspectors come anytime for a commercial kitchen. They aren’t likely to allow commercial cooking in the home. You will probably need TB tested and to pass a quiz on food handling safety. Your homeowners insurance won’t allow it either, what if someone died from your cookies?
I know you don’t think they could but if you made peanut butter cookies and other kinds a tiny bit of peanut could get into your other cookies and someone die.

Contact your local small business administration, get the librarian to provide reference information. Every state has its own laws regarding small business, food handling and home business permits.

Your state and local Board of Health have plenty to say about this, and none of it good. Your kitchen has to pass inspection. Without that certification from the board of health, you are not doing anything at all.

You can bake your cookies at home; then deliver them to nearby office buildings in your "goodie" basket. You can time it so that you hit them when they are the most hungry. The offices will welcome you. If you keep it small, the city or county will not be too strict with you. If you start making thousands of cookies and hire more people to deliver them, you will face stricter rules. For right now, just start baking..
